Kildare Youth Theatre in Syros for 'Inspire' Project

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

Immediately after our Oikos project, a number of Kildare Youth Theatre members from our Senior Ensemble and Caliban workshop groups travelled to the Greek island of Syros, for a second Crooked House Theatre Company led and Erasmus+ funded project called Inspire.

Set in Syros' main town, Ermoupolis, the Inspire project was a training programme for those of us who wish to transition from being 'led' to 'leading' in projects using theatre methods. Whereas the Oikos project was about learning how to use theatre to tackle social issues, the Inspire project was a programmed designed to teach the skills and foundations of theatre facilitation.

Bringing together 12 Kildare Youth Theatre members and 13 Greeks from Syros and further afield, the Inspire project was a week packed with interesting and diverse workshops. Morning workshops, which changed everyday, demonstrated various different facilitation styles from dance to devising. Afternoon workshops consisted of a set group, where three different groups devised a piece with their facilitator which was performed on the last night of the festival.

Outside of the workshops, the two countries got to explore the island and share meals, to form a sense of community during the project.

With thanks to the Akropoditi Dance Studio, who hosted the project for the week.
